I have never written a normal album review. I have written a The Fray album review when the album wasn’t even released buuuuuut that was just an “after the first listenin” thing aaaaand it was made when I was set to “fangurl” mode, soooo I guess I’m moved on, sooo I’m gonna write the review of “A Hundred Million Suns” by Snow Patrol.
I’ll be as objective as it’s possible, don’t expect too much
So, it’s gonna be a track by track thing sooo… yeah, well, I don’t know what it means, it just sounded good :9
1. If there’s a rocket, tie me to it
Ooookay, well. It’s a great song to start an album, and also a great song to start a concert! I know that, this was the first song oat Sziget festival. It’s awesome. The lyrics. Well… it’s like Gary. Very poetic. I mean, that… old-fashioned poetic, and I don’t have a problem with it
The drum is like hidden in the backgroung til the chorus starts and it doesn’t even unfold until the last repeat of the chorus.
The second verse is much more powerful in guitars and drums too, and it doesn’t continue with the strong chorus, but the chorus without drums, which made me feel… a bit happy, like I’m floating… then the guitars slowly evolve and the drums reach some kinda heyday or I don’t know what
But still, in the end of the song, I still feel it wasn’t enough, I wanted more, I feel emptiness, give me more, you sadistic bastards
10/8
2. Crack The Shutters
It’s very… very… It’s nothing like Final Straw and/or Eyes Open. Starts with Gary’s smooth piano notes (which he plays very proudly because he can’t play the piano
) the chorus cames in like some purifying storm and it feels awesome. Nothing new, just something really Garysh (NOT garish
), practically, nothing interesting happens here, just repeating the chorus for more than a minute with ravishing drum beats and some noise in the background that sounds like a bell. It’s a bit longer than it should be but it’s not too long
10/7
3. Take back the city
Final Straw. Obviously. It’s like it’s somewhere between Tiny Little Fractures and Wow, really
(not How to be dead, it’s nothing like How to be dead, forget it finally!) It’s powerfull. If you don’t hear the vocals, you can still recognize it, because it includes everything from Final Straw’s most powerful songs.
My only problem (and it’s gonna take its scores down) that it gets boring after a while. It’s cool and I would have gladly shouted “WOAAAA” with Gary all night long at the concert, but truth to be told, they stretched it way too long :S
They shouldn’t have. That’s why I change the song after the second time they repeat the chorus :S
10/6
4. Lifeboats
Definitely one of my favourite songs from the record.
It begins with one (then two) simple acoustic guitars. It continues with a very simple drum beat. Gary’s vocals are not so stark, it’s calm, easy to remember the lyrics, the melody. It’s not radio-friendly.
It goes on with a deep chorus-like thing which is not really a chorus, but it can be called “chorus”. I love the backing sound effect but I just can’t decide whether it’s an electric guitar or a keyboard o.O It’s very interesting.
If I had to say a very similar song to it (from an other artist) I would say Damien Rice’s Volcano. I don’t know why.
The song is 4:41 long which is not a bad thing. The ending is only Gary’s and Nate’s backing vocal with two simple sentences which just make the song stuck in your head.
Finally, the acoustic guitar disappears, just the drums and Paul’s easy-going bass guitar remain (and a few strikes with the electric guitar but we don’t like them, really…)
10/9
5. The Golden Floor
Oh, my holy crap. It’s nothing like Snow Patrol. I don’t know who/what to compare it to, but I don’t know… It’s very strange. En vivo, it’s very dramatic and deep. On the album, it’s very pure. And it has a strange rythm, which is very hard to applaud xD The chorus is simple, nothing new but the backing vocals are still interesting. Paul and Nate have a beautiful voice, really.
The bridge between the verse and the chorus was changed to live performances, it’s so much more powerful in live, I enjoyed it so much more.
The song doesn’t contain any completion, it remains the same smooth song. Everytime I’m listening to it, it’s like a one-minute long song, but then it comes to the end and it’s 3:19 long o.O”"” Perfect, really, they didn’t pull it for so long, everything is in its right place. In the song’s genre, I wouldn’t say there’s anything missing.
And I’m keen on the bass guitar (and the bassist too
)
10/10 (yes, I know, objective, sorry x))
6. Please just take these photos from my hand
We would expect an other calm love song from our very passionate-emotional Northern-Irish sweet heart, but that’s not the case. It’s powerful. I love it from the bottom of my heart. The beginning is strong even withouth drums. And when drums arrive and promote the chorus, it’s awesome
It’s like Take Back The City and Spitting Games (from Final Straw) in one
My problem is that it doesn’t have a catharsis. I mean… ending up in repeating “Please just take these photos from my hand” is not so Tia-friendly
I don’t like it and it annoys me sometimes. You know, to ruin the end of a cool song like this xD
10/7
7. Set Down Your Glass
I love this song
Very simple. The most relaxed song Gary has written. Ever. On a normal day, I wouldn’t like it. But for some reasons, the lines “When your eyes meet mine I loose simple skills, like to tell you: All I want is now”. Magical… I will give 10/8 because yes, some excitement is still needed, because I love the energic Snow Patrol much more than the emotional ballad – Snow Patrol, but this song is not an energic one. It does what it has to do.
It raises your hands up in the air for no appearant reason and mysteriously, those pocket lighters flame up as well.
And yes, Gary, we got your point… you finally got over whoever the last two records were about
10/8
8. Planets Bend Between Us
I disagree with the composition. After Set Down Your Glass, Engines should be the next. :S I don’t know, it’s maybe because this song is a slow love son again. Gary’s voice just flows plaintively over the song and it keeps saying “It’s all for you” and yes.. I can feel it’s for me
I can imagine myself dancing with my special someone to this song.
The interesting thing that I dig very much is that the song is 4:18 long and when it’s 2:57, it’s still the second verse, although neither the verses, nor the chorus are very long
So they bought me with this, totally
10/9
9. Engines
The song that I hated for a very long time and now, it’s almost like Disaster Button for me (we’ll talk about DB later) It starts with a promising backing vocal from Nate and Paul, an interesting but still, simple drum beat and Gary’s dipped vocals (which I do not really like, sorry) The chorus could be the chorus of a bit more powerful “Planets bend between us”, and if I were evil and if I wanted to hate Snow Patrol, I’d say it doesn’t even fit to the song.
But I love Snow Patrol and on normal weekdays, I’m not evil
So I like it
While “Lifeboats” starts with a pure verse and goes on with a deep chorus, it’s the exact opposit. But it has more things in common with “Planets Bend” than with “Lifeboats”.
I confused you, didn’t I?
10/8
10. Disaster Button
Finally! I always forget the location of the song on the record
Soooo… I was like: Omg, powerful, old-fashioned Snow Patrol song. And I always mistook it with “Please just take these” but now, I don’t.
It’s similar, but not too much
At first, Gary reached the point when he must write a song about his dark and sad past which he solved in a very gentle way. The song is not a sad one. It’s like.. ascension
The lyrics is still awesome, it was worth to learn so much Literature, wasn’t it?
His voice has never been this stark and energic and you wouldn’t tell but it sounds awesome in live! I didn’t have the luck to experience it but I saw videos and it rocks
The drums start to flow very gracefully, the guitars cover each other smartly and it’s cool
I would tell you more about the story of the song, so you could understand why it’s called “Disaster Button”, but I don’t think it’s my job x)
It’s almost four-minutes long, it’s as long as it should be, and the guitar solo is… omg…
I love it, the best part in the song
Awuh
I just wrote a plethora of laudatory sentences. I’m so passed being objective, aren’t I?
10/10 (I can’t resist, sorry
)
11. The Lightning Strike I.) What if the storm ends? II.) The Sunlight Thorugh The Flags III.) Daybreak
Hard to listen, I have to tell you. If I can have a suggestion. Don’t try to judge it after one listen. It won’t work.
Soooo… The first part, “What if the storm ends” just rocks live
It keeps repeating the same melody with different words and it has an incredibly dynamic pitch. The choir is awesome, I don’t know where they got the idea from, but it’s unbelievable. And then it disappears and only a bass, two pianos and Gary’s voice remain… that’s abnormal.
And define it in a good meaning
10/9
The Sunlight Through The Flags. I don’t know, I’m not a musician, but at the first time, I was expecting the same notes.
It was obvious that it comes next
Just two pianos and Gary’s voice
It’s amazing
It’s like a sweet chaos which disappears when the drums and the guitars came in with the chorus
I love this part, but this is the part in the song which I love the least. Is it making any sense? o_O”"”"”
I admire the bass, really, it’s cool
And really, not anyone can love Snow Patrol. They are hard to love when they have a bunch of likable songs in the beginning of the record and then they keep dosing harder and harder songs, they make it hard to love them, but fortunately, I’m easy to impress
10/6
Daybreak
The album is called “A Hundred Million Suns” and this is the only song that makes me feel like I was floating in the space and the planets keep passing by. Like stars are borning and dying next to me, as the whole Universe is pulsing, it’s undescribable
Yes, it might get a bit boring after a while but I don’t know. This part (and basically, the whole song) is not created for big thinkings and conversations about the meaning of our lives, it’s a perfect song to play it in the background and write stupid album reviews to it, really, it’s nothing more
10/7
This is Snow Patrol, it won’t save the world, it won’t conquere all of our hearts but it’s very lovely and charming how these guys make their dreams come true and meanwhile, they have a massive fanbase and its members are awesome, let me tell you
The best thing about Snow Patrol fans is that those who like Snow Patrol has the same mentality that I have
And those guys I love very much.
***REVIEW OFF***
I can tell you, I got to know and like more people through my Snow Patrol fanatism in the last two weeks than in my high school in the last two years
And I love those guys I got to know
Just to mention a few names, Mira, who’s an awesome chick and totally insane
Emese who we went to the concert with. Dóri, the girl who couldn’t come because she had some desease (I hope she’s all fine for now) a girl on Last.fm whose real name I still don’t know, but she was there on the concert too and she’s very kind, and a bunch of Snow Patrol fans on forums and places like that.
***REVIEW ON***
The ending of the album is… not so satisfying. The ending of The Fray’s new album (new… hah) is awesome. It’s like… the thought of our passing is still hanging in the air. But this…? It’s like Gary saying: You already want a newer album, don’t you?
It’s very sudden and violent, I don’t like it. I’d like to believe they did it on purpose, but I can never know it for sure, so shame on you, guys
I’m not saying it’s a perfect record. I still love Final Straw much better, but I like how they made experiments. How far they can improve, and I don’t know where’s the problem with going to music teacher. Everyone was so surprised when they heard that the members took music lessons before starting the recording.
Seriously, man, what do they think? That all of the members were born perfectly, without mistakes?
Soooooo… to the entire album, I would give a huuuge… EIGHT per ten, of course… I was soo unsure and between 7 and 8 that I averaged and it’s a whole 8… no decimals, it’s mathematically eight
In my heart… (uhh, getting deep) it’s another quiestion
I was as objective as it’s humanly possible for me, so those who know a lot about reviews and those who thought I’m gonna be more nice: Don’t blame me, I tend to aggravate unusually often
